Two years after hitting the shelves, now is when I can proudly say I just got around to finishing The Darkside Chronicles. Why have I avoided the Wii like airborne small pox for as long as I did? I have my reasons.
I didn’t expect to like the retellings of RE2 and Code: Veronica (since Darkside’s predecessor, Umbrella Chronicles, showcased a shoddy, ill paced reimagining of canon that was powered solely on shitty one-liners). My cynicism was tossed back into my face when I found the rehashes were solidly executed and surprisingly enjoyable to power my way through (author’s note: this is the only event in which tossing my cynicism – or, for that matter, any of my emissions – back into my face is a positive experience).
Darkside reshapes the stories where it sees fit – mostly to cater to the rail-gun nature of the gameplay – but I’d never call the changes anything less than faithful. The addition of constant banter between characters fleshes out series regulars more than I’ve seen allowed in main releases. After mowing down the hordes in my ten hour-plus run time, I relished in the fact that at no point did I feel like the developers didn’t love the ever living fuck out of RE as much as I do.
Just don’t ask me where all the survival horror went.
