Red Herb Review - Batman: Arkham Knight

image

“If gliding over the city, elbow smashing thugs, and pulling turbo-charged donuts in the Batmobile is the currency of Arkham Knight, I was richer than Bruce Wayne.

Rocksteady’s amalgamation universe of the Batman mythos is still one of the most respectful, top quality adaptations of any comic character to date…”

Rocksteady Shares Some More Details on Arkham Knight Season Pass

Still Wants $40

Rocksteady Games, the darlings of the superhero-to-game world (the only darlings, in fact), stepped in it with the announcement of a $40 Season Pass accompanying the release of their farewell to Arkham’s Dark Knight.

Announcing planned DLC before a game even releases is touchy business – which, amazingly, hasn’t stopped AAA studios from milking that cow bone dry – but the steep price point paired with vague information regarding the provided content put Bat-fans into a full-on BW brood.

In an attempt to assuage the masses, RG has released a bit of a lowdown on what to expect out of the Season Pass, which’ll see content drops once a month over the span of six months. New costumes and challenge maps are par for the course, but here’s the most enticing add-on’s:

Batgirl: A Matter of Family

An all new prequel story expansion in an entirely new location where you play as Batgirl for the very first time in the Arkham series - check out the first render of Batgirl (above).

The Season of Infamy

Play as Batman in all new story missions featuring legendary super-villains invading Gotham City, with new story arcs, missions and gameplay features.

Gotham City Stories

Play as Batman’s key allies in narrative missions extending their storylines, from both before and after the events in Batman: Arkham Knight.

Legendary Batmobiles with Themed Tracks

Drive the most iconic Batmobiles from Batman’s 75-year history, on custom-built race tracks, each themed to that Batmobile’s specific era. Every Batmobile will be drivable across every race track.

It’s a hefty amount of DLC, to be fair, and it’s the most postgame content we’ve seen out of any single Arkham title thus yet. But here’s the reality check: Rocksteady’s story add-on’s have historically been more jab than right hook; short and barely filling. Also: forty-Bat-damn-dollars. Still, if you can’t bare another Batman Saga coming to close, you’re $40 bucks away from staving off the grief. Worth it (?).

Batman: Arkham Knight Has a New Date, Some Swanky Collector’s Editions Too

Once set to patrol the night as soon as October 14th, Rocksteady’s final chapter of the Arkham series ends how it began: with a delay. Now True Bat-lievers will get their chance to don the cowl next year on June 2nd, 2015.

If spending $60 bucks on a box and a disc just isn’t your style, there’s two special editions of the game coming to save the day.

Behold the Limited Edition:For $99.99, this edition includes:

  • A Steelbook case
  • An 80-page art book
  • #0 of DC’s Batman: Arkham Knight comic
  • 3 Batman Skins based on The New 52
  • A Batman “Memorial Statue”

Then there’s the real deal. The Batmobile Edition:For $199.99, this bundle includes everything within the Limited Edition but swaps out the ominously titled Batman “Memorial Statue” for a Triforce sculpted replica of the Batmobile from the game.

In North America, both editions will only be made available on PS4 and Xbox One… So. That “Memorial Statue.” It gets me thinking that perhaps Arkham Knight is going to end the way The Dark Knight Rises should have. Unfortunately, we have a helluva wait until we find out.

Batman: Arkham Knight Falls into 2015

Get it? “Knight Falls”? Because Knightfa– All right, to hell with it. Thought I’d bring some Bat-Puns to the table since this announcement means it’s a dark day for the Dark Knight.

Originally meant to release October 14th this year, Rocksteady’s next-gen only end-cap to their Arkham Trilogy – probably my most anticipated game of the year (pre-E3, of course) – has been officially delayed into 2015. When in 2015? Sometime.

Delays seem to be as common as DLC and manual-less game boxes these days. But the last time Rocksteady was nervous about launching an unpolished product, they took six extra months and delivered unto the world Arkham Asylum in all of its Batman-y, freeflow fighting glory.

Besides, after E3 next week, something tells me the Fall season is going to be jampacked with things to burn my money on. It’ll be like a viking funeral. Except the boat is my wallet and the archer shooting flaming arrows at my money is the seventeen-year-old associate at Gamestop who doesn’t know they’re getting dropped after the season is over. Exactly a viking funeral in other words.

The final chapter in Rocksteady’s Dark Knight video game trilogy approaches. The Scarecrow’s impending threat of fear-gassing Gotham has trapped the Batman in a city populated by madmen. Worse – because it can and will always get worse for the Caped Crusader – there’s a new masked menace in town calling himself “The Arkham...
